Foreign workers in Australia have the same rights as Australian workers and are entitled to the same pay and conditions.
Minimum and award wages apply to everyone working in Australia, as do the 10 National Employment Standards, namely:
- Maximum work hours
- Flexible working arrangements for parents
- Parental leave
- Annual leave
- Personal / carer’s leave and compassionate leave
- Community service leave
- Long service leave
- Pay for public holidays
- Notice for termination and redundancy
- Having a fair work information standard given to you by your employer
Foreign workers should make sure the they work within their visa conditions – people working illegally are more easily exploited by unscrupulous employers.
