True of false – if you find it you can keep it?
Despite the old saying “finders keepers” the law takes a dim view of people who keep things they find, especially things of value.
While you might pick up a dollar coin on the footpath without the law taking too much interest, if you pick up a bag containing $10,000 and don’t turn it in to police, you could find yourself charged with stealing.
There have been a number of cases where people have found money in their bank account and gone ahead and spent it, only to find themselves in trouble with the law.
So, don’t rely on “finders keepers”. That other old saying “honesty is the best policy” is the the one to apply if you find anything of value.
